As a collector of traces of civilisation, especially in their anonymous form, Jacques Villeglé (1926-) is known to have amassed, since 1949, several thousands of posters ripped by passers-by. Since 1969, he has developed a socio-political alphabet as a tribute to Professor S. Chakhotin, former assistant of Professor Pavlov (and author of The Rape of the Masses; the Psychology of Totalitarian Political Propaganda in 1939). In his pictures, he combines these signs, which mark the tensions of our times, with the religious or esoteric symbols that impregnate our collective memory.
